Session Title:

Alternative Infills for Synthetic Turf Fields

Abstract:

Infill was introduced to turf fields in the 1990s and consisted of crumb rubber and sand. The sand and crumb rubber are added on top of the carpet and raked in between the fibers to provide footing; shock attenuation; and to hold the fibers upright. This system has been used since for most types and brands of synthetic athletic fields. Although the link is still unsubstantiated, there have been questions about the health and safety of using recycled rubber crumb and requests for alternative materials. This presentation will discuss the available alternatives and detail their pros and cons.

Session Title:

Efficiency Opportunities of a Comprehensive Water Management Program

Abstract:

This presentation focuses on how to save current year operational dollars by reducing water, energy, chemical, and service hour usage in potable and non-potable building water systems while balancing water efficiency and safety. A comprehensive water management program is the roadmap. Topics that will be discussed include how to uncover efficiency opportunities in cooling towers, boilers, water softeners, point-of-use filters, and supplemental disinfection operations. The presentation will include real examples of how things can go wrong if water safety and efficiency are not in balance. Optimizing building water safety and efficiency is the key to success. Done correctly efficiency opportunities can pay for the cost of the entire safety and efficiency program with dollars left over for other programs.

An Option to Effectively Meet Unexpected Demand for Additional Classroom Space

Abstract:

How do we design and build to better meet instructional needs we can’t anticipate? How we build, create or renovate classroom spaces is likely more important than what we build. This presentation explores how manufactured interior construction solutions speak directly to the challenges faced in developing educational environments today and for the future. Imagine meeting this next challenge with an approach that will result in faster project delivery, minimal disruption to the surrounding environment, time savings, quality control, future flexibility and sustainability.

A Day at the Zoo

Abstract:

People!! People are what life is made of. Every individual is two things — they are the person you see and the personality you experience. When the leader only sees the person and doesn’t understand the personality, they will lack the insights necessary to provide effective leadership. “A Day At The Zoo” is a one of a kind program that examines the personalities of 18 animals and compares their personality to the personalities of the people you are to lead. Participants will view the characteristics of the animal, the connection to people and provide them with Zoo Keeper notes, which will allow them to provide exceptional leadership for each individual.

Over the course of the last 2 years, our FO Team, helped to develop and executed a comprehensive and defensible water management program at UNC Charlotte. Until now the scenario was, ‘”What is the water quality on campus?”‘, “Well, Jon Q. Public, thanks for asking, here is a copy of the water quality report published by the City of Charlotte which is where our water comes from, I am sure it will answer all of your questions, glad I was able to help, goodbye!” Thank goodness that is not the story today. Today, we are flushing, sampling, and managing all of the water streams and you can too!

Session Title:

Benefits of Drones in Evaluating the Building Enclosure

Abstract:

Investigating and evaluating the building enclosure can be challenging due to access issues. Closely observing multi-story buildings and steep sloped roofs can be very difficult, and often require man lifts, high-reach equipment, and scaffolding, which can be costly and time consuming. Drones can quickly elevate and fly to the highest edges of a building in a matter of seconds. The ability to view these heights from the safety of the ground is a huge advantage for the observer. This presentation will detail the pros and cons of drone use on facilities, privacy issues, and FAA Regulations.

Air Cleaning and Ventilation in the Age of COVID-19: What we can do to manage our buildings better?

Abstract:

There has been much confusion on whether air cleaning and ventilation work at all for COVID-19 risk reduction and if they do, how they should be done. The purpose of this presentation is to provide the scientific evidence for what filtration and ventilation measures have been demonstrated to work for SARS-CoV-2 and other related respiratory viruses. A specific focus is on the context for these measures and how they can be used to achieve a healthier indoor environment as well as maximize the COVID-19 risk reduction benefit.
